After spending a few years fumbling around making money here and there online, I have learned the most solid, consistent way of doing it is to make email marketing central to your sales marketing strategy.

Back in 2004, I naively drove traffic straight to merchant sites using affiliate links. A while later, I created landing pages so visitors would see something different, although I neglected to include any opt in form. Crazy, yes… what can I say I was a newbie. I quickly learned concentrating all efforts into driving traffic for one-time sales was only benefiting the merchant, not me.

That’s when I realized the importance of follow-up. Although previous landing pages were filled with targeted content and some personalized information, sales didn’t double or become more consistent until I added an autoresponder opt in form which gave me the lucrative opportunity to follow-up with visitors.

Which leads to the number one reason to use email marketing to make money online…

Reason No. 1 – Follow-Up

Follow-up allows you the opportunity to expose your product or offer to visitors beyond their initial visit. It gives you the chance to present your offer in more detail and answer common questions (FAQs) before they’re even asked in your follow-up emails. Providing answers before they are asked (reading a subscriber’s mind) will slide sales right into your account.

What’s great is when visitors opt into your form to receive additional information, they are expressing interest to learn more & granting permission for further contact from you. This places you in an excellent selling position. You are now graced with another opportunity to “CAPTURE THE SALE”. How cool is that? Right! Just remember…

    I’ve got to tell you, niche communities are popping up all over the internet. They are a necessity for one main reason.

    The problem with content sharing communities is they quickly get saturated with low level SPAMMERS. It’s nothing personal, it’s just that it makes it more difficult to get through the deadwood of empty offers and used car salesmen who moved on to the internet.

    To make money writing articles, you must have something of value. Teaching people something they can use, that is original, or an original take on something that exists, works best. Writing an article that blatantly pitches your product, or someone else’s, is the quickest way to turn people off.

    The internet, if you haven’t noticed, is a place where developing trusting relationships gives you the best shot at creating a fan base which can then be monetized. Let’s face facts, people buy from people they trust. If you barge into an online community like this one, and post a bunch of crap about the latest “ground floor opportunity”, people will tune you out.

    An article is an opportunity to introduce yourself, and to share something with a likeminded crowd. If you have a handle on the English language, and can resist the temptation to blurt out “buy my product!” you can make money writing articles.

    Okay, now let me explain what the biggest mistake that article marketers make is. When someone clicks on your article, you want one of two results. They click your link at the end to get more information (optin or subscription), or they click through to a salesletter.

    Basically, the article that is written should be geared toward one or the other, and the reason is because the person who will click through to the salesletter is different than the guy who will click through to the landing page with the opportunity to subscribe for more information.

    Why? Pay attention because this is where most people make their mistake. These two people are at different stages of the buying cycle. One guy is looking for more information, while the other already has the information, but wants to buy the solution. He has already done his due diligence.

    You see, you wouldn’t write your article around the keywords “make money online” to a guy who is looking for the solution. That guy who just became a MLM rep., is the one who will subscribe to receive more good content from you. He doesn’t know yet what is available to him, but you can lead him down to the end of the buying cycle with good information that leads him to purchase the PPC program you are an affiliate for.

    On the other hand, you wouldn’t write an article around keywords “overnight acne cures” for people just looking for more information. They want that solution today, not more information.

    It is important to understand what stage of the buying cycle your target is. I guarantee, overcoming this one simple mistake will increase your chances of actually making money online. First you must figure out what your overall strategy is.

    What I mean is, are you trying to build a list, or make quick affiliate commissions? It really doesn’t matter which one you choose, other than the plan of attack will be different depending on which you are planning to do.
